Felt Underlay
Felt underlay performs exceptionally well on Victorian timber floors — making it the right choice for Jesmond bay-fronted terraces, Heaton Edwardian semis, and older properties across Sandyford and Shieldfield.
Timber floors flex slightly with temperature and humidity changes. Felt handles this flexing much better than foam and has a longer service life on timber subfloors.
Crumb Rubber Underlay
Crumb rubber underlay provides the best acoustic performance of any common underlay type, with impact noise reduction of 20–40dB. For Tyneside flats and upper-floor apartments in Quayside and Ouseburn developments, rubber underlay is the most effective way to reduce footfall noise.
Memory Foam Underlay
Memory foam underlay is the premium option for living rooms and master bedrooms where underfoot comfort is the priority. It’s popular in Gosforth and Ponteland homes where the living room carpet specification is at the higher end.
Memory foam is not the right choice for hallways or stairs — it compresses in narrow wear paths and doesn’t recover as well as felt or dense foam.
Underfloor Heating Compatible Underlay
Many newer Newcastle properties in Kingston Park, Gosforth, and Ponteland have underfloor heating. Standard thick underlay prevents heat reaching the carpet efficiently. A specialist low-tog underlay is needed — typically no more than 1.5 tog total for carpet and underlay combined.

The Right Underlay for Each Room
Different rooms have different requirements. Foxglove Flooring selects underlay by use, not by default.
Hallways and Stairs

Living Rooms and Bedrooms
PU foam (10–12mm, medium-high density) or memory foam for comfort in living rooms. For bedrooms, 10–11mm PU foam or memory foam — comfort is the priority and traffic is lighter.
For Victorian timber floors in Jesmond, Heaton, and Sandyford, felt underlay is the correct specification.
Tyneside Flats and Apartments

Underfloor Heating and Home Offices
Low-tog specialist underlay (6–8mm maximum) for rooms with UFH. Dense foam or felt for home offices — needs to handle desk chair castors without compressing in a wear path.

What Affects Your Cost
Room size, subfloor type (timber or concrete), and the specific performance requirements of the room — acoustic, thermal, or comfort — all influence the correct grade and therefore the cost.
Upgrading from standard PU foam to felt or acoustic rubber on a typical Newcastle living room (15m²) typically adds £30–£100 to the total cost. Over a carpet life of 10–15 years, the improvement in comfort, warmth, and noise reduction makes this one of the most cost-effective upgrades available.
